Caring For Your Flowers by Illyrian Flowers

We take great pride in preparing fresh floral arrangements that are designed to last. With just a little care at home, you can enjoy your flowers for longer and keep them looking their best.

Unwrap and prepare

As soon as you get your flowers home, gently remove any packaging and set them in a clean container with fresh, lukewarm water. If your bouquet is hand-tied and ready to display, you can place it straight into a vase. Otherwise, remove any leaves that fall below the waterline, as these can cause bacteria to build up. It is generally recommended to place freshly cut florist flowers in lukewarm water upon arrival. This helps them rehydrate and absorb water more effectively, preventing air bubbles from forming and blocking water uptake. 

Trim the stems

Using clean, sharp scissors or secateurs, cut about 2cm off the bottom of each stem at a slight angle. This helps the flowers absorb water more easily. Try to re-trim the stems every two to three days for the best results.

Choose the right vase and location

Select a clean vase large enough to support the flowers without crowding them. Top up with fresh water and flower food, which we include with most bouquets. Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, radiators and draughts. Avoid placing them near fresh fruit, as some fruit releases ethylene gas that can shorten the life of flowers.

Refresh regularly

Every two or three days, change the water, clean the vase and re-trim the stems. Always use fresh, room temperature water with new flower food if you have any left. This keeps bacteria at bay and encourages your blooms to thrive.

Extra tips

Some flower varieties open more quickly in warmer conditions, while others last longer in cooler spots. Tulips, for example, continue to grow even after being cut, so trim them regularly. Lilies may drop pollen – remove the stamens gently to avoid staining. If any flowers begin to fade, remove them to keep the arrangement looking fresh.
